Abu Dhabi Eats - Sportsman's Arms Family Brunch

Last Friday, Scott and I were very kindly invited to try out the Family Brunch at The Sportsman's Arms gastropub in Zayed Sports City.

The first thing I noticed when I walked through the door was how much it reminded me of home. The casual vibe teamed with comfy leather couches and window booths for dining at, reminisced of an upmarket Wetherspoons. But you won't find any sticky floors or tattered furniture here!

The Family Brunch is based around a set menu and features some classic pub grub. There's a starting platter to share which consists of several small bites and breads. The Farmhouse Terrine is made from slow-cooked duck and the combination of herbs gives it an almost festive flavour. I particularly enjoyed the caramalised onion bread with a dollop of sweetly spiced, fruit chutney.

There are seven main course options to choose from, with a good range of classic dishes. After much deliberation, I finally settled on the Fish and Chips whilst Scott went for the Black Angus Cheeseburger.

Both mains were excellent. The fish was as good as any I've tried in the UK. It was moist and coated in a crunchy batter, served with mushy peas, chunky potato wedges and a helping of tartare sauce on the side. Comfort food at its finest and although the plate was generous, I could quite happily have eaten it twice. As for the cheeseburger, the meat was juicy and flavorsome. I managed to sneak a bite before Scott devoured it - he grunted his approval through mouthfuls of prime beef. The burger is served with a side of french fries and a citrusy mustard dip.

With little breathing space left, we tackled the mini dessert platter which consisted of fruity Sorbets, shortcrust custard Fruit Tarts and Chocolate Brownies to name but a few. However, the highlight for both Scott and I was the absolutely to die for, Sticky Toffee Pudding. It was rich and treacley and I was seriously tempted to ask for another piece to go.

In addition to the fantastic food, the service at The Sportsman's Arms was excellent. We chose the brunch package that included alcohol, (house beers, wines and spirits) and were never left with an empty glass. The staff were polite and friendly, going out of their way to ensure we were happy and enjoying our time with them.

I honestly cannot fault The Sportsman's Arms. If you're looking for a great spot to relax with a group of friends or enjoy a casual, pup experience in the city then look no further.

The Family Brunch usually runs from 1pm until 4pm every Friday, however during Ramadan, the brunch hours are between 8pm and 11pm. The Sportsman's Arms also run a number of specials nights which include weekend roast dinners and steak and wine nights every Tuesday. There's a large outdoor terrace for the cooler months and also a huge screen showing the Euros throughout the Summer.
